Maritime industry is the backbone of modern businesses, transporting over 90 percent of the world goods. It promotes the world’s economic growth and employs millions of people worldwide. Over the last two decades, the maritime industry has witnessed tremendous growth and progress, offering an abundance of exciting career opportunities across various sectors; be it at sea or land.
The future of the maritime industry certainly looks promising. On the global scale, countries worldwide are concentrating on economic developments by focusing on international trade activities. In the next 10 – 15 years, world trade is projected to grow significantly, resulting in a doubling of seaborne trade volumes from 10 billion tonnes of cargo annually today to 20 billion tonnes of cargo around 2030.
Back home in Malaysia, the land mass development in the state of Johor across the coastal region (water-front), central and south-eastern is seen as a truly positive prospect that will underpin a strong economic growth and sustainable future for the country. The anticipated 1.3 billion tonnes of cargo or about 60 million containers will further strengthen the activities of maritime trade not only in Johor but also in Malaysia.
In tandem with the growing industry and increasing demand for manpower, Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT) was established in 2011 to undertake maritime education, training, research and consultancy activities for the healthy growth of the local and regional maritime industries. NMIT aims to provide its students as well as industry personnel with the right skills, ample knowledge and valuable experience that are required for a successful maritime career.
NMIT is a unique amalgam of expertise and industrial experience of professionals and academics from both Malaysia and the Netherlands. Supported by two of Dutch most prestigious maritime institutions, Maritiem Instituut Willem Barentsz and Maritiem Instituut De Ruyter, NMIT is committed in developing human capital needed to support the growth and development of Malaysian ports, shipping and logistics, shipbuilding and ship repair, and offshore oil & gas sectors.
NMIT opened its doors to the first batch of students in 2011. Since then, it has supported nearly 2,000 students at both its City Campus in Johor Bahru and EduCity Campus in Iskandar Puteri. NMIT currently offers programmes at diploma level in the field of maritime, shipping logistics and port operations with several other courses in the pipeline covering areas in maritime law & insurance, offshore oil & gas operation, maritime occupational safety & health, nautical studies, and marine engineering. In the following years, NMIT will be offering a broader range of academic and training programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, providing its prospective students with more options to pursue their studies.
True to its vision of becoming a world class maritime education and training institute, NMIT’s involvement in the education field is further enhanced by strategic collaborations with some of the world-best maritime institutions such as Southampton Solent University in the United Kingdom, University of Tasmania (Australian Maritime College) in Australia, NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences and Dutch Offshore Academy in the Netherlands, and Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport in Egypt. Through the partnerships, NMIT diploma programmes are approved and recognised by the partner universities, and NMIT diploma holders are exempted from the early part of a Bachelor degree. This means significant savings in terms of time and costs as NMIT diploma holders will only have to study a period of just 12 to 18 months to gain a Bachelor degree from some of these universities.
Through its efforts in providing a world-class maritime education and technological solution which stresses excellence in teaching and dedication to learning, NMIT will continue to nurture maritime professionals towards world class standards. Its focus is and will continue to be on expanding the latitude that maritime education and training are traversing. True to its philosophy, “Excellence with purpose”, NMIT is fearless in its efforts towards attaining its vision and leaving its mark in the maritime industry.
